NOTAN offers placements to Sports Management Students

Friday, February 10th, 2017

Following in the successful footsteps of Victoria Spence, NOTAN have once again approached Northumbria University to offer placement opportunities to its Year 2 Sports Management students.

The benefits for NOTAN, are the extra pairs of hands the students bring to the delivery of our Key Performance Indicators, and in the planning of future events. For the students it is an opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge of sports management into practice.

The placement duration is March to May 2017, however it is hoped that beneficiaries will remain linked to NOTAN beyond placement end and continue working with Network Clubs and NOTAN officials.

Track Inspection by North Tyneside Council

Friday, February 10th, 2017

On Friday 10th February NOTAN officials met with Lindsay Reid, Group Manager for Sports Development & Outdoor Leisure Facilities, and Ian Cahill, Properties and Assets Manager, North Tyneside Council, to inspect the track and fields facilities at Churchill Playing Fields.

The inspection followed a submission by North Shields Polytechnic Club a list of required actions recommended by UK Athletics Inspectors, at the end of the 2016 season. The UK Athletics list is one of several presented to the Council, others by private contractors, therefore Ms Reid and Mr Cahill formally visited the site ahead of our meeting with the Deputy Chief Executive, North Tyneside Council, Paul Hanson, on 14th February 2017.

During their visit Ms Reid took photographs of the damaged areas, and Mr Cahill used a dictaphone to record his notes during the tour by Tommy Brannon, Chairman, NOTAN, and Ian Woodward, President, North Shields Polytechnic Athletics Club. Ms Reid and Mr Cahill, are aware that the first scheduled event for the 2017, athletics calendar is NOTAN’s Summer Grand Prix event on Saturday 1st April 2017.

Wednesday, February 8th, 2017

NOTAN officials met with Felicity Shoesmith, Community and Voluntary Sector Liaison Manager, and Lindsay Reid, Group Manager for Sports Development & Outdoor Leisure Facilities, North Tyneside Council, on Tuesday 7th February 2017, to discuss North Tyneside Council’s Community Discount Policy Form, with regards to NOTAN’s proposed asset transfer of Churchill Playing Fields.

Ms Shoesmith has advised that NOTAN consider the Council’s Strategic Priorities when applying for the discount, and that the Community Discount Policy, referred to by the Council as ‘long lease’, will usually be granted for 30-50 year terms. To be included in our application would be our Governance arrangements, external funding attractions and information on how NOTAN intends to increase the usage of the asset.

Further talks will be held following the NOTAN’s next Managment Committee meeting on 27th February 2017.
